How young professionals are breaking into social enterprise
When I was in college just a couple years ago, I fell in love with social enterprise. The basic idea of using revenue generating activities to create economic and social value just resonated with me.
Naturally, I decided this is what I wanted to do with my life and started asking people “how?” The answers I got were generally along the lines of - Go corporate, build the skills, and then give back at a social enterprise.
I didn’t like those answers, and ended up finding a different path.
I’m certainly not the only one. Recently, I interviewed fifteen young professionals who landed social enterprise jobs after college. I’m not talking about unpaid internships. These are full-time roles with serious opportunities for growth and development.
How did they do it? That’s the theme of this latest blog series, Breaking In.
I’m so excited to share what I’ve learned from young professionals who are defining their career in social enterprise. Our conversations centered on how they landed that first job and how they continue to grow and excel in their roles, but a lot of other great career advice surfaced as well.
Over the next few weeks I’ll cover some of the biggest themes and insights from these conversations, and at the end of the month I’m going to share my curated insights in the Mission Driven Monthly Newsletter.
Why share the blog series before the newsletter? Because this series doesn’t have all the answers. Instead, I want each post to be iterative and dynamic. I encourage you to share your thoughts and reactions to my blogs, because your input will inform and enhance the newsletter. I eagerly await your comments, tweets and emails!
Speaking of the Newsletter, be sure to sign up! It will cover everything I’ve learned about how young professionals are breaking into social enterprise.
You can build a career in social enterprise! I think this series will help you get there.
